Rock is Here for Pay

What happened to artistic integrity? Gone are the days when a musician would rather crush the bones in his playing hand or rip out his own larynx than sell a song to BMW or Hewlett Packard.
That’s why advertising agencies used to have jingle writers. You know, poor schmucks who wrote such mind numbing classics as “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz. Oh what a relief it is”.
They wrote all the music for ads.
At the time, those crappy, infectious little ditties made me want to throw a brick at the TV. Now, I truly miss them.
Because today, everybody’s a sellout.
Being anti-establishment or anti-corporate is simply a thing of the past. In fact, selling out is the first step to stardom. No need to develop your craft or work hard at creating something new and original, just make sure it sounds cool enough to sell some crappy computer or useless toy.
Truly…music doesn’t say much these days other than buy this or try that.
Soon our children will not even know individual artists. They will simply ask one another, “Hey, have you heard the new Ford commercial, it rocks?”
It’s a sad commentary. And I think it’s a bigger crisis than global warming.
Music is being co-opted by the advertisers or corporations at an alarming rate.
And it’s only a matter of time, when we all think the only good place to hear new music is in an ad.
It’s time to kick it old school. Time to stick it to the man and tell him to keep his money grubbing paws off great music.
Or pretty soon, great music will be a thing of the past.
